Abstract

Epigenetics encompass inheritable changes in gene expression profiles that occur without alterations to the genomic DNA sequence. Epigenetic modifications conduct important roles in diverse biological processes that range from regulation of gene expression to human diseases such as cancer. Histones and histone modifying enzymes are subject to diverse epigenetic modifications including phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation, ubiquitination, SUMOylation, ADP ribosylation, deamination, and proline isomerization. These diverse post-translational modifications can modulate the activity of transcription factors and histone modifying enzymes by altering the chromatin state for either activation or repression. Autophagy is a highly conserved self-digestion process, essential to maintain homeostasis and viability in response to nutrient starvation. Although the components of  in the cytoplasm have been well-studied, molecular basis for the epigenetic regulation of is poorly understood. In this presentation, I will discuss our continued efforts to decipher epigenetic regulatory mechanism and newly identified signaling cascade regulated by epigenetic modification and address their roles in autophagy.
