Abstract
Communication in biological systems at multiple levels, from molecules to organisms, is an essential process for sharing information among members of society. At the molecular level, communication at a particular set of molecules is important not only to determine the fate of individual cells but also to create harmonized and complex multicellular functions. Therefore, understanding the nature of molecular communication and its higher level of functional outcomes is a fundamental step to elucidate how the biological system works as a whole. In this talk, I will introduce a series of optogenetic methods to control specific molecular communication in living systems. These optogenetic tools based on using plant photoreceptors can be easily applied to various cell types and organisms to control specific molecular functions and corresponding biological processes by light illumination in a highly spatiotemporal manner. We anticipate that our optogenetic toolbox will provide unprecedented opportunities to deeply understand the dynamic nature of molecular communication and their contributions on diverse higher-order biological functions and diseases.
